Privacy notice
This notice explains what we collect when you join the Chakam Nigeria waitlist on chakam.africa, why we collect it, and the control you have over it.
At a glanceThe short version
- What we collect
- Your email address, and whether you asked for Nigeria priority access.
- Why
- To tell you when Chakam Nigeria launches.
- Legal basis
- Your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
- How long
- Until 12 months after Chakam Nigeria launches, or sooner if you ask us to delete it.
- Who processes it
- Our hosting and database providers, on our instructions only.
- We never
- Sell your data, use it for advertising, or use it for political campaigning.
01Who we are
Chakam is a non-profit, non-partisan civic technology organisation. For the purposes of the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, the data controller responsible for your information is [legal name of the registered entity], registered at [registered address].
You can reach us about anything in this notice at [privacy@chakam.africa]. Our data protection contact is [name or role of the data protection officer].
02What we collect
When you join the waitlist
- Your email address.
- Whether you asked for Nigeria priority access.
- The date and time you joined, which is our record of your consent.
Automatically, to prevent abuse
To stop automated mass signups, our server reads the IP address of the device you join from. We do not store the IP address itself. We store a salted, one-way hash of it, which we use only to limit how many signups come from one connection in an hour. It is deleted together with your waitlist record.
Our hosting provider keeps standard technical logs of requests to the website, which include IP addresses, for [log retention period].
On your own device
The waitlist page uses your browser's local storage to remember that you have joined, the email address you used, your priority access choice and your light or dark theme. This information stays on your device and is not sent to us. You can clear it at any time in your browser settings.
We do not use cookies, analytics, advertising trackers or tracking pixels.
Fonts
The site loads its typefaces from Google Fonts. To deliver them, your browser connects to Google's servers, which receive your IP address. Google's handling of that data is described in Google's privacy policy (opens in a new tab).
What we do not ask for
We do not ask for your name, phone number, voter card details, address or political views to join the waitlist.
03Why we use it
We use your email address for one purpose: to tell you when Chakam Nigeria launches, and to invite you early if you asked for priority access. We may send a small number of related updates before launch, such as a change to the launch date.
Our legal basis is your consent, given when you submit the form. You can withdraw it at any time, and doing so does not affect anything we did with your consent before you withdrew it.
- We will never sell or rent your information.
- We will never use it for advertising or share it with advertisers.
- We will never use it for political campaigning, or send messages on behalf of any party, candidate or government body.
- We do not make automated decisions about you, and we do not build profiles of you.
05Transfers outside Nigeria
Our providers' servers are located outside Nigeria. The waitlist database is hosted in [Supabase region, e.g. the United Kingdom or the European Union], and the website runs on Vercel's global network.
The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 allows these transfers where personal data stays adequately protected. We rely on [the transfer basis confirmed by counsel, e.g. the providers' data processing agreements and contractual safeguards].
06How long we keep it
- We keep your waitlist record until 12 months after Chakam Nigeria launches, then delete it.
- If you ask us to delete it sooner, we will do so within 30 days.
- If you choose to stay in touch after launch, for example by creating an account, that will be covered by a separate notice at the time.
07Security
Your information travels over an encrypted connection. The waitlist database cannot be read from the public internet: the only way in is through our own server, which holds the access key, and access within Chakam is limited to the people who need it to run the waitlist.
No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affecting your data occurs, we will notify the Nigeria Data Protection Commission and, where required, you, as the law requires.
08Your rights
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 you have the right to:
- be told how your data is used, which is the purpose of this notice;
- get a copy of the data we hold about you;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- have your data deleted;
- object to, or ask us to restrict, how we use it;
- receive your data in a portable format;
- withdraw your consent at any time;
- complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
To use any of these rights, email [privacy@chakam.africa] from the address you signed up with. We may ask you to confirm that you control that address before we act. We will respond within [30 days].
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (opens in a new tab).
09Children
The waitlist is for people aged 18 and over. If you are under 18, please do not join. If we learn that someone under 18 has joined, we will delete their record.
10Changes to this notice
If we change this notice, we will update the effective date at the top. If a change affects how we use your information, we will email you before it takes effect.
